Orange County native Connor Ruffalo isn't just walking toward graduation, he is sprinting to the finish line. Having completed his undergraduate degree in Economics in just two years, his drive and ambition are deeply shaped by his family's immigrant journey from Sayula, Mexico to Tustin, Calif., a story that taught him to seize every opportunity.

This mindset served him well when the pandemic hit during high school. While others waited for things to return to normal, Connor saw a gap in educational support and took immediate action, launching a tutoring startup focused on SAT prep and academic coaching. He built a platform to manage tutors and connect them with students. “That was my spark moment,” Connor reflects. “I discovered that entrepreneurship was a path I could take.” When it came time to choose a college, the decision was clear: UC Irvine offered academic excellence, a commitment to diversity and innovation, and proximity to the family whose sacrifices had made his education possible.

True to form, Connor didn't waste a single moment. He immediately connected with the ANTrepreneur Center where he was introduced to Manifest at UC Irvine, a selective, high-energy community of student builders and aspiring entrepreneurs. Connor would later take on several leadership roles within Manifest. Wanting to connect more deeply with his roots, Connor also discovered ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals for America), an organization dedicated to empowering and developing Latinx leaders. “While ALPFA National had a strong presence, UC Irvine's chapter wasn't very active," Connor explains. "We set out to change that." As VP of Finance, Connor helped revitalize the student organization, growing its membership and enabling more students to attend the ALPFA National Convention, an annual gathering that brings together over 6,000+ Latinx professionals and students for career development and networking opportunities with top employers.

The UCI-OC Alliance scholarship was instrumental in making Connor's accelerated timeline possible, covering his summer tuition and opening doors to invaluable networking opportunities. This support freed him to focus on experiences aligned with his long-term vision, including the Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders (SIEML). As an SIEML graduate, Connor is now eligible to receive up to two years of full fee and tuition fellowships at any of the UC’s six graduate schools of business. It's a powerful example of the UC system's commitment to removing accessibility and affordability barriers for students who are academically talented and have the potential to be strong industry leaders.

With this pathway ahead, Connor is setting his sights on UC Berkeley for his MBA, but not before spending the next two years growing his experience in entrepreneurship and management consulting, particularly in AI implementation. Grounded in economics, he believes expanding opportunity is key to strengthening immigrant communities. He sees this work as preparation for his long-term goal of building a business that uplifts immigrants through innovation and technology. “My dream is to create a business that uplifts Mexican immigrants, just as my grandfather transitioned from fieldwork to owning a successful real estate business,” Connor shares. For Connor, entrepreneurship isn't about individual achievement, but rather about honoring his family's journey by forging pathways for others.
