UCI-OC Alliance is honored to have partnered with UC Irvine’s School of Social Ecology to host the second annual Dia de los Muertos at UC Irvine. More than 1,200 people of all ages gathered at the Irvine Barclay Theater for a collaborative cultural event where the lives of lost loved ones were celebrated through ofrendas (altars commemorating those that have moved on from this life).

The vibrant event united students, faculty, staff, community leaders, and families under one purpose. Attendees were able to decorate sugar skulls, enjoy free tamales and Pollo Norteño, watch Ballet Folklorico, Aztec performances and listen to headliner Grammy Award winning Mariachi Divas. Other performers included the Ballet Folklorico de UCI, Mariachi Orgullo de UCI, Claudia de la Cruz Flamenco and students from Madison Elementary School of Santa Ana’s Ballet Folklorico and Stoddard Elementary School of Anaheim’s Mariachi. Congratulations to Dean Jon Gould, his team for receiving the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's prestigious Grand Gold Award as well as the organization’s Best of District VII Award.
