UC Irvine Achieves Prestigious Dual Carnegie Designations
In other exciting news, UC Irvine has been awarded both the Research 1 and Opportunity College and University (OCU) designations in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications, recognizing its excellence in research and student success. Only 21 institutions nationwide received this dual honor. UC Irvine is one of just three Association of American Universities members – and the only one in California – to achieve both.
Awarded by the Carnegie Foundation, this esteemed designation acknowledges UC Irvine's unique ability to combine world-class research with a deep commitment to access, equity and opportunity for students of non-traditional backgrounds. UC Irvine leads in multiple student success metrics, including the highest Pell Grant six-year graduation rate and top second-year retention rate among Opportunity Colleges and Universities, as well as economic mobility for its graduates. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of the university's faculty, staff, students and community partners.
“UC Irvine is proud to be recognized for both what we discover and whom we empower. These designations reflect our deep institutional commitment to ensuring that groundbreaking research and inclusive excellence go hand in hand. We’re advancing knowledge while lifting lives – and that’s what a great public university should do.” - Chancellor Howard Gillman.
