Through a journey of determination, success, and a deep-rooted desire to make a difference, UC Irvine economics graduate Roger Nieves ('93) exemplifies the power of education and the spirit of giving back. After 21 years at PIMCO, in 2022, Roger embarked on a new mission of giving back to the institution that helped shape his life.

Roger's involvement with the UCI-OC Alliance isn't about being a member. It's about being a mentor, a guide, and a beacon of hope for students who remind him of his younger self. As part of the Student Success Committee, he's found his calling in the Financial Literacy Initiative, working closely with the SAGE Scholars Program. For Roger, SAGE reflects his own journey. He sees himself in these bright-eyed scholars, many of whom face financial challenges like those he once encountered. With each presentation on financial literacy, Roger shares knowledge, hope, inspiration, and the belief that with the right tools and support, these students can achieve their dreams.

Roger's commitment is rooted in gratitude and personal experience. He vividly remembers the doors that opened for him thanks to the Hughes Aircraft Company scholarship. Now, he's dedicated to opening those same doors for others.

As the son of Cuban immigrants, Roger's story is one of resilience and the American dream. He understands the value of challenging work, the importance of education, and the transformative power of opportunity. He knows life's journey isn't always straightforward. When he speaks to students, his words carry the weight of lived experience. Roger's wisdom is always tinged with compassion and understanding.

In his free time, Roger can be found pondering the insights from his favorite books, listening to his favorite band or spending time with family. These personal touches remind us that Roger isn't just a successful alum or a generous donor – he's a multi-faceted individual with a rich inner life and a deep well of experiences to draw from.

Through his work with the UCI-OC Alliance, the SAGE program and the School of Social Sciences, Roger is paying it forward, ensuring that the opportunities he once received continue to be available for generations to come. His story is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact one person can have when they choose to lift others as they climb.
