Scholar Spotlight: Rocio Rivera
SPOTLIGHT
Growing up in Palmdale, Calif. as the oldest of three in a working-class family, fourth year Rocio Rivera learned early that dinner table conversations could change the world. The Political Science and International Studies major grew up in a bilingual household where politics were personal and her Guatemalan and Mexican immigrant parents shared stories of resilience and hope.
Interested and aware of the issues present in her largely working-class immigrant community, Rocio recalls the glaring absence of representation in her local elected officials as a motivating factor in her desire to pursue a political science degree. She had a deep desire to not only share the correct narrative of the immigrant constituency in her region but also address complex social issues in a humane manner. This led her to compete in mock trial and public speaking competitions as early as third grade. While other kids her age were focused on playing and having fun, Rocio was developing skillsets, honing her voice and forging the path to leadership.
Unlike many Latinx parents who shelter their daughters, Rocio’s parents unconditionally supported her ambitious dreams never limiting her potential and always encouraging her to be of service to others. Their belief in her abilities gave Rocio the confidence to pursue higher education at UC Irvine. The selling point for Rocio was UC Irvine’s academically stimulating collaborative environment focused on student support and global partnerships.
At UC Irvine, Rocio has reaped all the benefits a higher education institution has to offer embodying the true spirit of an Anteater. A bright star amongst her peers, Rocio embarked on international programs an impressive five times beginning her international journey with the Social Justice and Activism Program in Paris, France. That opportunity sparked her curiosity and led her to other international programs in London and Oslo before returning to UC Irvine to serve as a resident advisor for Student Housing and The Todd & Lisa Hallbrook Center for Investment and Wealth Management (CIWM)'s LIFEvest summer residential program.
Driven by professional mastery, Rocio strategically positioned herself in Dublin to intern with the Irish Parliament during election season, before securing a highly coveted United Nations internship in Geneva. Her experiences haven't taken her away from her roots but that has deepened her commitment to them. Fast forward to today, Rocio Rivera is at the epicenter of influence and policy as she interns for a U.S. Senator in Washington, D.C.
True to her early aspirations, Rocio will be applying to law school, and she remains open to multiple pathways that could amplify her impact. Becoming an elected official is at the top of her list, but she's also open to becoming a diplomat, or foreign service officer. For this first-generation college student from Palmdale, the world has become her classroom, but her heart remains firmly planted in the community that raised her to believe change is possible—one conversation, one vote and one voice at a time.
